Members of Chippenham Sailing and Canoeing Club will now be able to sit back and enjoy themselves after a donation from Waitrose has allowed them to purchase a canoe sail.

The club, which has been running for 50 years and has 250 members, received £250 from the Waitrose Community Matters scheme in Chippenham.

Julia Mannering, treasurer, fundraiser and coach, said: “We are really appreciative towards Waitrose and its customers for choosing us. We were amazed at how much we got.

“The money will pay for a new sail and rigging, so when you are canoeing, instead of paddling you can sit back and enjoy yourself. You can take it out with you and is easy to put up.

“Because we are a sailing and canoeing club it brings together both sides. It adds more dimension and fun to what we already have.”

Waitrose staff and their children were able to take to the water after the cheque presentation on Monday and glided up and down the River Avon.
