Scout Megan Hawkins will be jetting off to Japan to represent Wiltshire in the world jamboree next year.

The 13-year-old, of Ducks Meadow in Marlborough, is one of thousands of youngsters from around the world who will come together for the 23rd World Scout Jamboree.

Megan will head out to Japan in August with three adult unit leaders and during her three-week visit will spend time with a Japanese family and visit Hiroshima for the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing.

The St John’s School student was one of 27 youngsters chosen to represent the county at the event.

She had to go through a vetting process to be chosen, including demonstrating why she wanted to go on the trip.

She said: “I was over the moon when I found out I’d been chosen.

“I’m really looking forward to staying with the Japanese family and learning about the way they live and the differences in our cultures.”

Megan has been fundraising for the £3,000 trip and the Marlborough Scouts presented her with £500 during their AGM last week.
