SKATER HOCKEY: Swindon Flames Youth cruise to victory

SWINDON Flames Youth enjoyed a comfortable 16-3 victory over Chippy Trixtsers A to consolidate second place in the SASH league table, despite missing a handful of regular players.

Led by Liam Coleman, the Swindon captain and the league’s leading goalscorer, a Flames win was never in doubt.

Coleman found the net for the first goal within two minutes and followed this up with a further three goals to extend the lead midway through the first half.

Harry Gobey registered a fifth before Coleman scored again and, with 30 seconds of the half remaining, Gobey set up Dylan Jackson for a seventh.

With the Chipping Norton side only able to offer sporadic resistance the Flames stepped up a gear in the second period, as Coleman rattled in three goals in the opening 90 seconds and Harry Hayes made the total 11 a minute later.

After such a frantic start to the period the game settled down, as both sides began to cancel each other out.

The Trixsters’ Devon Shadbolt eventually managed to register a quickfire brace to add to their solitary effort from the first period, but inside the final five minutes the Flames came back to life.

Gobey scored the 12th before Harry Hayes combined with Oliver Dunsmore to bring up a baker’s dozen.

Inside the last three minutes Coleman popped up to score a further three goals, with debutant Callum Stockley-Phillips credited with an assist.

The victory leaves the Flames in a good position to challenge Oxford for the SASH title, as they have to meet twice more once the season resumes after the summer break.

l Swindon Flames are always looking to recruit new members at all levels and are especially seeking new members for the newly formed Pee Wee (under 12) team.

Training is held weekly at the Link Centre on Saturdays from 10am-11am under the guidance of GB ice hockey coach Mark Beggs.
