Warning over fake tobacco

Shoppers were warned about the dangers of illegal tobacco and encouraged to report the issue, when a campaign roadshow rolled into the town centre.

Illegal tobacco is known to make it easier for children to start smoking because it is sold at pocket money prices, meaning that young people could fall prey to the lethal habit which claims the life of every one in two smokers. Illegal tobacco is also known to make communities more attractive to criminals.

That’s why Swindon Council Trading Standards and Public Health teams are working with Smokefree South West on a campaign launched last week to increase awareness about illegal tobacco among the general public, urging fewer people to buy it and more people to report it.

Trained staff were on hand to talk to shoppers in Regent Street on Friday to highlight the dangers.

Coun Emma Faramarzi, Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Safety, said: “Smoking is a serious public health issue and cheap illegal tobacco just makes it even harder to keep our children away from harm.

“That’s why we’re working hard with our partners to tackle the problem, which can also feed other criminal activity. We know that people in Swindon want to help protect their children and this campaign will enable them to identify cheap illegal tobacco, so together we can keep it out of our communities.”

Selling illegal tobacco is a criminal offence. Anyone wishing to report the selling of illegal tobacco can contact Trading Standards by emailing tstandards@swindon.gov.uk or calling 01793 466155.

People can also report it anonymously online at www.stop-illegal-tobacco.co.uk or call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

So when a drug is prohibited, it is sold by crimnials and anyone can access it, including children.

Remind me. Why is Heroin illegal again?

Smoking is all part of natural selection. Lets face it you have to be pretty dumb and stupid to spend your hard earned money putting burning leaves in your mouth which are detremental to your health, more than likely going to shorten it and make you smell like an old ashtray no matter how many mints you suck or perfume you spray. And most of the smokers I know totally agree with me! (cue the negative thumbs!)

The fact that illegal cigarettes are harmful to health comes as no surprise given that legal cigarettes are harmful to health. This is mainly about lost tax revenue.

If illegal cigarettes are bad for your health is smoking LEGAL cigarettes OK.

Smoking anything is stupid, but to try to make illegal products appear to be more harmful because they are illegal is also stupid.

All that is needed to make the product legal is to pay tax on it. How does that make it any safer.

Ooooh will no-one think of the children? The poor poor defenceless children? Will nobody think of the children, and illegal tobacco which makes communities attractive to criminals?
Will anyone spare a thought for the poor, uneducated, parent-less children roaming innocent and unprotected abroad like new-born lambs, whose guileless and angelic eyes only have to alight upon an illegal packet of cigarettes to become 60-a-day Dot Cottons and 50% of them dead because of it an unspecified time later?
Will no-one think of them?

Those who knock the smokers should be ashamed as the levels of revenue keep your taxes down. Why indeed are tobacco products so cheap around the world and so expensive here?
I have never smoked and never offended by those that did smoke and to be honest i never saw anyone walk out of a pub when a smoker lit up.
My grandpop died at 92 having been a chain smoker all his life and a diabetic.
But it seems to be fine to pollute the atmosphere with pollutants from vehicles and other leisure products eh?
