Trowbridge teenager Kelsey James had more reason than most to celebrate at her Year 11 school prom, having had a heart transplant when she was 14 months old.

Miss James, of Azalea Drive, had the operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. She suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy, when the heart becomes weak and enlarged and struggles to pump blood.

The 16-year-old, who goes to John of Gaunt School, is now healthy and was one of many pupils celebrating the end of their secondary school education at Leigh Park Hotel in Bradford on Avon.

She arrived at the prom in style in a Marcus Manta vintage car, worth about £40,000, owned by a friend of the family.

Miss James, who is going on to study horse care and management at Lackham College, said: “It was a really good evening and I was dancing all night long. It was quite emotional everyone being together one last time.

“Having my operation so young has made me resilient. It doesn’t really affect me any more and I’m now hoping to be a vet when I’m older.”
