Devizes children join Mardi Gras fun
Southbroom St James Academy carnival group took part in the Ryde Mardi Gras on the Isle of Wight.
After its success in last year’s Devizes carnival, the school group was the only mainland carnival group to be invited by the New Carnival Company to bring its winning Aztec Jungle costumes to this year’s island celebration.
More than 750 young people and adults took part in the parade, with thousands turning out to watch.
Hattie McVey, aged eight, said: “It was fantastic. People loved our cheeky monkey, awesome Aztec and beautiful parrot costumes.
“We ate our picnic lunch on the beach, paddled in the sea and danced all the way around the parade.”
Rachel Merritt, Year 3 teacher at the school, said: "The Southbroom St James Academy community places huge importance on the arts and it is exciting to have our passion for creativity recognised by prestigious groups like the New Carnival Company.
"It is our aim to enable children to realise their talents and fulfil their potential in all areas of the curriculum. Experiences like this create warm and happy, lifelong memories.”
