A decade after her career as a member of female duo Pooka came to an end, singer Sharon Jones is looking to attract a new generation of West Country fans.

Promoting her new album Roses At The Top, Sharon will be performing at Cheese and Grain, Frome, tomorrow with multi-instrumentalist Fiddes Smith before an intimate solo show at the Cellar Bar in The Bear, Devizes, on Friday, July 18.

Sharon’s current musical style aims to weave a rare and compelling spell with delicate vocals and poignant lyrics.

“I would say that people who enjoy listening to music of a more intimate nature would enjoy my songs," she said.

"Lyrics are very important to me and my songs are very open hearted.

“In my songwriting I try to share my experiences of life, no matter how difficult they are. I feel as a songwriter that it is vital to go to those depths. I am influenced by songwriters such as Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Kate Bush and Neil Young.

“The style of music is a little bit country/folky, sometimes classical with a hint of blues thrown in the pot.

“For the concert in Frome I will be joined by my friend and fellow musician Fiddes Smith. He will be playing banjo, mandolin, guitar and ukulele and also singing back-up harmonies. I will be playing the piano, guitar and ukulele.”

She has enjoyed a diverse musical career, after Pooka’s early success when her partnership with Natasha Jones led to an album contract, UK and US tours and appearances as support for artists like Everything But The Girl, Al Stewart and The Levellers.

She has also performed as one of the three Fates alongside Ani Difranco and Martin Carthy in Anais Mitchell’s folk opera Hadestown.
