Characters from classic musicals will be dotted around Hilcott, near Pewsey, this weekend for the village’s second scarecrow trail.

It has been organised by Matthew Wilson, aged 16, of Harding Terrace, who was inspired to launch the event after visiting Urchfont’s trail.

His first event attracted hundreds of visitors and Matthew, who has just finished his GCSEs at Lavington School, near Devizes, is hoping to attract more this time.

He said: “Everybody met in the village hall and we put our ideas forward and then we had a vote and musicals was the most popular.

“It’s taken a few months to organise, but I’ve finished my exams so I’ve had a bit of extra time, which has been helpful.

“We’ve had to organise things like getting the barbecue and getting people to make cakes and getting people to help with the car parking.

“We’re going to start putting everything out on Saturday morning and we’re hoping to get a few hundred visitors.”

About 30 scarecrows will be placed along the circular route from Hilcott Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday.

Residents of Hilcott and Bottlesford have given a helping hand.

Matthew, who will be joining St John’s in Marlborough in September, said: “People have been really enthusiastic about making the scarecrows.

“I’ve seen a few of them and what I’ve seen are really good. I’ve made one myself, but I think I should keep what it is a secret.”

Money raised will be divided between the village defibrillator fund and North Newnton church.

There will be tea and cakes at Hilcott Village Hall and burgers and ice creams in Yards Lane.

The trail opens from 11am to 4pm on both days.
