Modern Pentathlon world champion Mhairi Spence spurred on students from Chippenham’s Sheldon School ahead of their Olympic Day.

The 28-year-old Team GB Olympian, who trains in Bath, gave an inspirational talk on how perseverance was the key quality that helped her overcome setbacks and, in Rome in 2012, win the world title in the event that comprises pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horseriding and running.

Sheldon had two weeks of track and field athletics to promote the spirit of the Olympic Games. All 1,100 pupils in Years 7 to 11 recited the Olympic oath and took part in the 3k fun run.

Event organiser Emma Langdon, said: “Mhairi gave an incredibly honest and inspirational talk about the challenges of being an Olympian but the qualities that helped her achieve her goals apply to everyone and all aspects of life.

“The sight of seeing 1,100 Sheldon students running around the course was a sight to behold.”
