YOUNG athletes at Holy Rood Junior School will now look the part as they tackle their way to victory in brand new rugby kit.

Pupils who had up until now competed in various tournaments in their own sports clothes, yesterday received £500 worth of custom made jerseys, shorts, bags and equipments from building material supplier Travis Perkins.

The surprise donation was warmly received by the children, who are now more determined than ever to make their mark on the inter-school rugby league.

“The children are absolutely delighted,” said Holy Rood Catholic School headteacher Tony McAteer. “Buying a kit like that would put quite a dent in a school budget.

“During the last couple of years we had a huge involvement with the Schools Sports Partnership. We entered many tournaments with other schools in Wiltshire and there has been a focus on rugby. But we were one of the only schools with no proper kit.”

It is hoped the set of 14 uniforms will give children the extra edge they were missing to finally bring home the champions’ trophy.

“To get a brand new kit is a great boost,” he added. “We have not won before but we have come second. Hopefully we will get great results next year.

“Staff at Travis Perkins presented the children with the kit and they were very pleased. We get involved in the community and it’s nice when the local community responds.”
