A telegraph pole came down across the road and caught fire outside the Jolly Huntsman, Kington St Michael, early on Monday.
Electricity to some houses was cut off and residents gathered in the street at 4.30am.
Firefighters and police were called and the road was closed for an hour while electricity staff made the area safe. A technical fault has been blamed.
