Flash floods have been reported across Trowbridge, as torrential rain batters the south west.

Road have been closed and rail travel suspended, with travelers advised to check their journeys before setting out.

Residents of Dursley Road have been forced to evacuate their homes, while the A363 Bradford Road has been closed in both directions, following flooding on Brook Road.

Wiltshire Council’s highways contractor Balfour Beatty had a road block set up on Dursley Road earlier today where an employee, who did not wish to be named, was manning the scene.

He was using one the council’s six specialist flood relief vehicles stationed in Warminster, which are usually dispatched to pump floodwater from remote, rural areas.

He said: “When I first got here there was nothing here, but you could see all the silt where the flooding had been. Then it started raining again and it quickly built up again.

“It’s draining away now, but it’s still not safe to drive through, as some of the storm drains have lifted up, and we’re expecting more rain, so it will come back up again.”

The road was blocked just after the junction with Rutland Crescent, home of Christine Stevenson.

She said: “I’ve been ok, but some of the neighbours are badly affected. I’ve lived here for seven years and I’ve never seen it like this.”

Roads through Atworth are currently waterlogged, but passable, as is the B3109 between Bradford Leigh and Corsham.

National Rail has confirmed the line between Westbury and Bath Spa stations is now open following a temporary closure this morning, with delays expected on both lines.

Homes and shops in the town have also been hit by temporary power cuts, with reports of outages at the ASDA, Sainsbury's and Tesco Extra supermarkets.
