SWINDON Supermarine boss Dave Webb said Saturday’s friendly with local rivals Chippenham was a better challenge for his side than the defeat to Swindon Town.

Marine beat Mark Collier’s Bluebirds 2-0 at the Webb’s Wood in Saturday’s Rob Dean Testimonial.

Josh Morse opened the scoring after a nice team move from the home side before Dan Drewitt produced a touch of magic to seal the win.

Former Shrivenham man Drewitt, who spent last season playing for Chippenham boss Mark Collier’s son Sam at Barrington Park, scored in the closing stages with a spectacular effort.

Picking up Bluebird’s ‘keeper Kent Kauppinen’s clearance, Drewitt evaded Tyron Leigh with a neat nutmeg before lofting the ball over Kauppinen from 40 yards to notch his first strike since joining Marine in June.

Webb was delighted with the result against the Southern League Premier side and with the goals his side scored, especially Drewitt’s.

“When you’re playing a team from the next league up, it’s a good test. We spoke about the Swindon game, and I was really pleased with the performance,” Webb to the Advertiser.

“With respect to Swindon I thought yesterday was going to be more of a test, I thought Chippenham would play more like a team in our league, I thought it might be more competitive, with a few more tackles maybe, and just in how the way the game was played, and it probably was.

“I think you’ll struggle to see the quality of those goals all season. We played well, the goals were great and add to that we were a couple of players down with injuries, with a couple more missing.

“Dan Drewitt, a lad who I brought in, is already showing what I saw in him, he’s a young player who’s never played at that level and he scored a fantastic goal.”

Webb was also keen to acknowledge his former charge Dean, who was at the game on Saturday. The friendly raised nearly £750 to go to towards the former Marine and Chippenham midfielder’s rehab for the horrific injury he received against Hungerford last season.

“I had the pleasure to manage to Deano (Rob Dean), he’s fantastic lad,” added Webb, “he’s doing well and hopefully we’ll see him playing football again. It was a good game, played in good spirit, that’s what it was all about really.”

On Friday night Highworth Town and Purton played out a 1-1 draw at The Elms. On Saturday Fairford went down 8-2 to Binfield and Sam Collier’s Shrivenham lost 1-0 to Southbrook.
