Teenager Oliver Bird is hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps and complete the Three Peaks Challenge.

Oli, 16, of Lady Wood, Market Lavington, will be accompanied by his father Martyn, and mother, Jackie, when he attempts to climb Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Ben Nevis in Scotland.

Oli, who has finished his studies at Lavington School, is hoping to raise £3,000 to be split between his forthcoming trip to Ecuador next year with Camps International and the charity Wooden Spoon.

Oli, who will be doing the challenge tomorrow and Saturday, said: “My dad did the Three Peaks Challenge in 2011 with a friend so I thought why not give it a go? I have done Scafell Pike before but not the others. I’m quite nervous but it should be good fun. We have been doing training runs on Salisbury Plain.”

Oli plays for Devizes Colts rugby team and Wooden Spoon is the charity of British and Irish rugby. It makes a difference to the lives of children and young people across the UK who are socially, mentally or physically disadvantaged through providing funding for projects such as sensory rooms, medical centres and specialist playgrounds.

Camps International organise trips for young people to get involved in meaningful projects in some of the world’s more deprived areas. In the summer of 2015 Oli will travel to South America to work on projects in Ecuador’s Cloud forest, the Andes, and the Amazon, to help rural communities and take part in conservation activities.
