A Jaguar driver who tried to flee from police at 90mph in a 30mph area while over the alcohol limit has been jailed for a year.

Adam Barker, 27, also did not have a full licence when he hared away from police after they tried to stop him in the Ladyfield area of Chippenham.

But Barker, who has nine previous convictions for driving while disqualified, was caught because police knew where to find the S-type Jag.

The court heard officers had deemed it too dangerous to continue the pursuit but one of them knew where the car had been seen recently on a nearby housing estate.

And when they got Barker to the police station they found he was almost twice the legal alcohol limit and was uninsured.

Colin Meeke, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court on Friday that patrolling officers saw the 52-reg car exceeding the speed limit at 11pm on Friday, March 21.

When they tried to stop it, the vehicle shot away on Sheldon Road, then going along various residential streets reaching speeds in excess of 90mph.

As well as being caught driving whiles banned in the past he also has a conviction for drink driving.

Barker, of Cheltenham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, excess alcohol, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and no insurance.

Mike Jeary, defending, said his client had broken both his arms and legs in a car accident last October when he was over the limit.

"He tells me he is suffering from severe depression and is using alcohol to suppress the pain of arthritis he is getting from injuries he received," he said.

"It begs the question why drive at all and he feels extremely guilty for what he did. No one else was involved and the police did not chase.

"They knew where the car came from and there he was on a local housing estate."

Jailing him, Recorder Harry Martineau said: "On the night in question you drove absolutely appallingly, 50 in a 30 limit before the police ever saw you.

"When they tried to stop you, you took off.

“The intervention of the police ought to have brought you to your senses, but off you went.

"You were, as was later discovered, nearly twice the limit for alcohol and before the police gave up the chase because of the danger with which you were trying to escape them, you were driving at 90mph on wet roads.

"You were most of this time in a 30mph limit. You said yourself in interview you were pushing 100.

"This is not the first time you have driven as you ought not. Your record is appalling."

He jailed him for a year and banned him from the road for four years and until he passes and extended test.
