THE team behind Swindon’s outdoor cinema are already planning next year’s sequel even though there is half of this summer’s programme left to run.
Overwhelmed by the success of the six events which they’ve held at the Old Town Bowl, Cult Screens is pursuing plans to show more films next summer.
The screenings have welcomed audiences of up to 300 people who have been able to enjoy films, old and new, from the comfort of deckchairs and bean bags.
Phil Cottle, Cult Screens’ head of ideas, said: “For our first year we have been delighted by the response that we’ve received. We’ve had some excellent crowds with great audience participation and it has even got a little raucous at our screenings of Dirty Dancing and Grease.
“We think it is a great venue and we’re very keen to return to Swindon next year with another selection of great films.”
The company, which runs events in Bristol, Reading and Oxford, will be screening three more films between August 21 and 23. On the Thursday, the David Bowie film Labyrinth will be playing, followed by Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel on the Friday with the weekend’s flicks coming to a close on the Saturday with 1980s favourite The Goonies.
The events will open at 7.30pm with the films begininning at 8.45pm.
There will be music before the films start and if the weather gets cold there are blankets available so viewing isn’t hampered.
Phil said: “All three are great films which will appeal to all tastes. The Grand Budapest Hotel was released earlier this year and proved very popular when we showed it at Reading last week, while the other two are always good fun.
“We’ve had lots of sell-out screenings in Swindon and we’d expect a few more during the rest of our events.”
Cult Screens’ Swindon events will finish next month. Back to the Future will be playing on September 11, Breakfast at Tiffany’s will be showing on September 12 and The Big Lebowski is being screened on September 13.
