Marine are the comeback kings

MIDFIELDER Chris Taylor insisted Swindon Supermarine’s season ‘starts now’ after their stunning comeback to beat Shortwood 4-3 on Saturday.

After going in at the break 3-0 down, Dave Webb’s side produced a scintillating second-half display as Luke Hopper, Ross Adams, Joe Shepherd and Josh Morse all found the back of the net to earn a dramatic victory.

After defeats at Didcot and at home to Yate, in which Marine conceded six and failed to score, Taylor believes the victory and the manner in which they earned it will get the South Marston side going as they once again look to be a part of the promotion shake-up.

“Being 3-0 down is not where you want to be, so the message at the break was just to go out and try and get one because if you can get one you give yourself a chance,” he said.

“Losing our first two games was really hard so hopefully this can kick-start our season now.

“We gave them a goal after four minutes and then the second came from a free header at a set piece, and the third was a penalty which was a bit half so we were pretty frustrated.

“We made some individual errors but after we got back into it and our confidence came. When we scored our third there was still 20 minutes to go and we felt as if we would go on and score more, and that’s what we did.”

Webb has had to watch as star strikers Josh Parsons and Ash Edenborough left Marine this summer, but Taylor believes what is left behind is still more than capable of competing in Southern League Division One South & West.

“It’s a big transition and that showed in the first two games because we’ve lost two good players,” he said.

“But the more we play and the more we grow as a team the better we will be and I’m sure we can compete.”

Next up for Webb’s Marine side is an away visit to AFC Totton on Tuesday night before a home game with Taunton on Saturday afternoon.
