Row erupts over a rise in large classes

This Is Wiltshire: Anne Snelgrove Anne Snelgrove

A ROW has broken out over school class sizes in Swindon, after it emerged the number of Key Stage 1 classes with more than 30 pupils has more than doubled in the past four years.

Government figures show that since 2010, the number of large classes has gone from five to 12, with more than 350 children affected.

The Labour group has said it is a result of cuts to school budgets and exam results are at risk. But the Conservatives say each of the increased classes is due to parents winning appeals and therefore legally permissible.

In 1997, the government outlawed classes which have more than 30 pupils, but schools can gain permission to be exempt in certain circumstances.

Anne Snelgrove, the South Swindon Labour parliamentary candidate, has argued that by having large classes, children’s life chances are being put at risk.

She said: “Labour put reducing class sizes at the top of our agenda in government. It is staggering that all that good work has been undermined by this government despite David Cameron's promises heading into the election.

“The Government is failing our young people by cutting funding, removing the regulations that prevented over-crowding in our classrooms and allowing unqualified teachers to teach our children.

“Thanks to Labour’s investment in local schools, over 70 per cent of Swindon pupils achieved five or more A* to C GCSEs in 2010, compared to 45 per cent in 1997. Over-crowded classes means less teacher time for individual pupils, threatening children’s ability to reach their full potential.

“Parents will want to know their children are being taught by a qualified teacher in reasonable class sizes.

“What these new figures reveal is that the job of teachers in Swindon is being made harder and harder as class sizes increase.”

However, the Deputy Leader of the Council Brian Mattock (Con, Old Town) has hit back, saying not only are all the oversized classes permissible but the council has invested a lot in increasing primary school places.

“All these are lawful exceptions to the infant class size rule, which means parents have been successful getting a place through the independent appeal panel, based on their individual circumstances,” he said.

“Is the Labour candidate saying she will over-rule parents’ choices?

“The Conservative Administra-tion has made huge investments in Swindon’s primary schools. Since 2010 alone, we have provided an extra 15 classes at Key Stage 1, as the number of pupils has risen from 5,990 to 6,550.

“If the Labour candidate wants more schools, how can she build them if her Labour councillors want only to cut the Borough’s debt?

In 2013/14 alone, the Council spent £5m towards the expansion of Haydonleigh, St Francis, Catherine Wayte and Orchid Vale as well as beginning construction of Tadpole Farm Primary schools.

“The Labour candidate has a short memory. Has she forgotten that the last Labour-led Council administration left a £65m backlog of school repairs that the Conservatives have fixed?”

This press release is asking to spend money (don't forget her Government spent it all last time), whilst her councillors are saying they will reduce the deficit. No chance!

All we're going to see for the next 9 months are reprinted press releases of Snelly moaning about something... anything.

The reason that there are more pupils in classes than the schools can cope with is almost entirely due to the policy of uncontrolled immigration that dear old Annie and her Labour government foisted on the country.

And, of course, they saddled many schools with PFI loans and bankrupted the country such that it's been almost impossible for the government that followed them to build enough schools to meet the demand imposed by Labour's uncontrolled immigration.

Thankfully, the current government has somehow managed to get the economy out of recession and on the road to a level of recovery. Labour must never again be allowed to bring this country to its knees.

That's what I was wondering.

Does it really matter though if a class has, for example, 32 pupils instead of 29 if the teacher is good? Obviously there is an upper level when it becomes untenable - but is this fuss really worth it?

It's not about actual numbers - because, as you say, 32 pupils makes no difference to 30 pupils in reality, just as having 28 pupils wouldn't mean they automatically get a 'better' education.

The numbers have been made available and, politically, it's something for Labour to rustle up a press release over.

As I said above, this is all we'll see from now until the election in May. Sadly, the Adver seem only too happy to reprint Labour press releases.

No mention from Anne about uncontrolled immigration being the primary cause of strain on all our of public services - schools and the NHS being the worst affected by Labour's appalling policies.

What a meaningless statement. The current government have cut classes in some areas and also built new schools - one very nice one here in Swindon at Croft.

Unfortunately, it's your Labour pals who introduced the mass, uncontrolled immigration which has seen the huge increase in demand for schools and hospital places - most of which the people who have arrived have never paid a penny towards and don't cover the costs of even now.

Nobody is 'meddling with votes' - other than you - it's all in your mind, Davey. You got banned for going on about it last time and still can't shake your weird obsession.

Pity its half empty just like the neighbouring East Wichel school yet there is, and has been for years, an acute shortage of school places in North Swindon.

Everyone wants schools built where they are truly needed.

I'm not asking questions for him - he's just one of Davey Gravey's obsessions, which I'm getting tired of.

You would have thought that having had his account banned and created a new one then he would have turned over a new leaf and forgotten all the rubbish about the voting system and stupid veiled threats to other users. But no - he still keeps banging on about them. Not only that, but having polluted the posts with his childish rubbish he then tells us that it's none of our business - astonishing!

My account was "cloned-hacked" once, but I didn't go on about it! Why would I care? It's only an anonymous account on a local web site.

How is your "outing" of clegane true? Anyone can "clone" an account - it's incredibly trivial (though it's not actually cloning). If he knew how to do it then he would still be posting under his ChannelX name, despite its ban.

Why would he post as channelx again, the evidence shows he doesnt? He was ringer and Tim newroman before channelx. He gets banned then creates a new account. A self proclaimed IT genius like yourself would know that. His blatant up and down voting is obvious to a intellectually challenged man like myself for Christ's sake.

I can't think of a sensible reason to defend such a person.
