Last chance to see former Devizes Catholic convent school
The last opportunity to look around a former Catholic convent school in Devizes will be available on Heritage Open Day on Saturday, September 13.
The former school is now the offices of charity Community First but the premises, Wyndhams, is due to be sold at auction on September 11.
The Trust for Devizes has organised the Devizes Heritage Open Day.
Campaigns manager Philippa Morgan said: “Wyndhams will provide a one-off opportunity for people to visit it and there will be a lot of old photographs on display on the day.
"It was the home of St Joseph’s Convent Girls’ School between 1889 and 1969 and quite a lot of elderly ladies in town went there.”
Wyndhams is one of three new buildings that are open to the public on Heritage Open Day.
The others are The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, next to Wyndhams in St Joseph’s Place, and St Peter’s Church in Bath Road.
On show at St Peter’s Church will be the plans for apartments and houses at the former St Peter’s School next door.
This is the second year that The Trust for Devizes has organised the event.
Mrs Morgan said: “We had at least 300 visitors last year, it was a very good response. All the buildings have free entry. There’s a national website for Heritage Open Day and we are on it so hopefully that will bring more visitors into the town.”
The other buildings that are taking part are: The Masonic Hall in Morris Lane; St Mary’s Church, New Park Street; The Lockup at the rear of the town hall; Wiltshire Museum in Long Street; St John’s Church, Long Street and St James’ Church, Church Walk.
Entry is 10am to 3pm except for The Lockup (11am to 3pm), Wiltshire Museum (10am to 5pm) and St James’ Church (10am to noon).
