Football: Wiltshire League round-up

This Is Wiltshire: Melksham Reserves manager Steve Burns Melksham Reserves manager Steve Burns

Melksham Town Reserves got back to winning ways with a victory at Trowbridge Wanderers.

Steve Burns’ side, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Devizes Town Reserves last week, just three days after hammering Wilts Calne Town 7-0, ran out 2-0 winners at the Lambrok Playing Fields.

Melksham are ninth in the early season table while John Phillips’ men are 11th.

Wanderers are a place above rivals Trowbridge Town, who slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wroughton.

Mitch Spackman passed up Town’s only opportunity of a scrappy first half but the visitors took the lead early in the second period after a drilled cross struck defender Stephen Toogood, allowing a Wroughton to capitalise.

The Swindon side then doubled their lead before Brad Whitham stabbed home from close range with four minutes remaining but it was too little, too late for Mike Alford’s side as they suffered their second successive 2-1 reverse.

“It was a disappointing defeat as we had a decent squad out, that should have been good enough to get something from the game,” said manager Alford.

“For some reason, we are waiting until we are behind before playing anything like we can and it is leaving us with too much to do.

“I am still working on the shape of the side and understanding the new players’ strengths, and now we can get back to training in the week - we can try some different things to stop the run of defeats.

“We have a really tough game here next Saturday against Ludgershall (Sports), so we need to make sure we are ready for that.”
