Fire investigators are still unable to say how or why a fire started in a 17th century home in Market Lavington, near Devizes.

The blaze ripped through the property in the High Street on Tuesday afternoon last week and crews from all over Wiltshire battled to stop it spreading.

This week a spokesman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: “The fire remains under investigation and we are working with the building’s insurers.”

House owners Frank and Sarah Jones and their younger daughter, who still lives at home, were out when the fire started just after 1pm.

Next door neighbours Sally and Patrick Lort-Phillips were also away in Pembrokeshire and the neighbour on the other side of the Jones’ property Paul Churchill was in London.

All were telephoned by friends and returned home to find the street cordoned off by police.

Extensive damage has been caused to the Jones’ three-storey home.
