FAIRFORD town manager Gareth Davies says that his team are starting to come together after they secured a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Wantage Town reserves.

After a poor start to life back at Cinder Lane, Davies believes that his new look squad is starting to take shape.

And while he admits that they need to tighten up in the defence, he is happy with how his team push forward.

Luke Cordery gave Fairford the lead on Saturday in this Hellenic League Division One West clash before the visitors drew level through Harry Dalton.

Alex Rudd restored the hosts lead, but an own goal and another Dalton strike looked as if Wantage had secured the win.

However, debutant Tom Ballard struck a delightful equaliser for Fairford which left boss Davies purring.

“It was an absolute worldy,” he said. “It was so good that it was stuck in the stanchion.”

Despite having not won since the opening day of the season when they defeated Shortwood United reserves 5-4, Davies believes that his side are not too far away from where he wants them to be.

“It was much better than last week (Fairford lost 3-0 to North Leigh United),” he said. “We are starting to put some performances in and I can see that we are not a million miles away from where I want us to be.

“We are a young side, we do have a lot of new players, so it will take time. Watching QPR on the TV on Saturday they kept on about how they are a new team and that it will take time – it does.

“But the improvement on Saturday was massive.”

In the build to the match, Fairford had to contend with losing winger Josh Skeates to Wootton Bassett Town.

But Davies feels that the club have got a ready-made replacement in Jack Allen.

“We had signed Jack before Josh left,” Davies added. “He is a very good striker and a proven goal-scorer at this level.”
