SIGNATURES and pledges of support have been flooding in all year and now Karen Edwards’ Justice For Becky petition is nearing the end of the line.

Thousands of people have put their names forward to help drive change to the Police And Criminal Evidence Act after a conviction could not be brought against the killer of Becky Godden-Edwards.

News of Becky’s murder broke in April 2011, on what would have been her 29th birthday.

And, more than three years on, her mother is still determined to prevent any other family suffering the grief of not having closure.

Packs totalling more than 70,000 signatures have been distributed nationally, and now Karen is calling for them to be returned by the end of next month so they can be presented to Parliament.

“People have taken packs home and into their work, and we are approaching the final hurdle now,” said Karen.

“The appeal is still ongoing, and has already been raised in Parliament and seen by the Justice Minister, but it needs to be presented properly so it can be debated.

“People have been protesting with their pens and now they should be heard. The whole thing has gone viral.”

Karen wants a section of the PACE Act scrutinised properly, and backs greater transparency in the police and justice system.

“The PACE guidance was written 30 years ago, and it is exactly that; guidelines,” she said.

“Damian Green [Minister for Policing, Criminal Justice and Victims] quoted that PACE should be a living document and needs to be continually looked at. That is all we are asking for here.

“We are trying to change it so it is more transparent, and no mother should ever go through what I have had to over the last few years. Hopefully, with these changes, they won’t have to.

“What we proposed was for there to be more recordings and cameras. That has started to happen, with policemen starting to wear cameras.

“That way they are protecting both sides, the police and the public.”

Karen needs all the signatures to be returned by October 31.

“It certainly isn’t over yet, and if people still want to help out or have lost their pack we can give them a new one,” she said.

“I do not want another family going through what I have been through.

“Physically and emotionally it has been hard. I have got her back and put her to rest, and there is not a day that I don’t think of her.

South Swindon MP Robert Buckland will present the petition to 10 Downing Street when all the signatures are in.

“Prior to my recent appointment I put forward recommendations to Government and my party to get them thinking about policy changes,” he said.

“I will do all I can to make the case. We are not talking about compromising police officers, this would make it easier for them to collect evidence when investigating the most serious cases.”

Petition packs can be returned by post to JusticeFor Becky Appeal, 100 Victoria Road, Swindon, SN1 3BE. Alternatively email justiceforbecky@yahoo.com ,call Karen on 07747 023518, or Sandy on 07934 718192.
