Wiltshire pupils are being invited to design a bird or bat box which can be installed on solar farms, and win free solar energy for their school.

Pupils first draw their bird or bat box and then finalists will bring their designs to life, after which a South West winner will be chosen.

Lightsource Renewable Energy Ltd, which is running the competition with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), will provide all the equipment and install a solar system costing up to £10,000 at their school.

All designs that make the final shortlist will also be given the chance to put their boxes on solar farms across the country.

Mark Turner, operations director at Lightsource, said: “This competition will give pupils, teachers and parents a better understanding of how solar energy works and the benefits it can bring to biodiversity.”
