A pair of fundraisers have used their superhero powers to raise vital cash for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Claire Rumary and Debbie Pratt, who work at Cards Plus in Westbury, are taking part in National Air Ambulance Week (September 22-28), in which Wiltshire Air Ambulance have encouraged people to dress up as heroes.

Mrs Rumary, manager of the shop in the High Street, has already played Supergirl and Batgirl, and hopes to finish off the week in an ambulance costume.

She said: “ I thought it would be a good idea and got in touch with them.

“It has been brilliant, with lots of balloons in the shop and the posters they gave us.

“We have had people coming in asking what is going on, so I hope we are raising awareness.

“Customers always come in and tell us stories and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance has featured in many of them.”

Customers have been able to guess the name of the toy dog in the window, for £1 a go, and the winner will be announced tomorrow. There is a collection tin in the shop for donations and more money will be raised at tomorrow’s cake sale.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance paramedic Richard Miller visited The Avenue School in Warminster and The Oasis Academy in Trowbridge this week to promote the charity, and will be at schools in Colerne and Chippenham today.

He said: “I told them about the history of the air ambulance, how we go about raising awareness and raising money, and they could ask questions.

“These have included ‘how many patients have we attended that have fallen off horses?’ “It has been lovely to see nearly all the staff and pupils in fancy dress. Everyone has got into the theme.”

Rebecca de la Bedoyere, fundraising manager at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We’re really pleased with how the week is going. So many people of all ages are supporting it, by dressing up as heroes, taking part in events, volunteering their time to collect and telling us who their heroes are via social media.

“It’s a wonderful way to recognise and appreciate the heroes in our own lives while raising funds for this vital service.

“We have also had a lot of positive comments about the Patient Story films, which are featured each day on our website.”
