A proposed expansion by major employer Wavin is set to bring at least 100 new jobs to Chippenham.

Wavin, which makes heating, plumbing and drainage products, has announced a multi-million pound investment, bringing a dedicated manufacturing facility to the town in the next couple of years.

The move, due to be complete by mid-2016, may see the extrusion facility now in Brandon, in County Durham, close and its 90 staff relocated to Chippenham and Doncaster.

Wavin said the facility would create between 100 to 120 primary jobs in manufacturing and distribution in Chippenham, boosting its number of staff from 280 to around 400.

It will also continue to provide apprenticeships through Wiltshire College.

The company hopes to acquire land to the north of Parsonage Way, according to consultant Roger Taylor, who spoke on behalf of Wavin UK at the town council’s planning committee meeting this month.

He said the main access to the site would be relocated and the factory would be well hidden from the main road, with about 10 of the 17 acres of land acquired being kept as a “shield”.

Every effort would be made to keep extensions discreet and not visible from the main road by the use of trees and bunding.

Ray Small, HR manager at Chippenham, said: “Our plans include expansion of the workforce, not all at once but over a period of time.

“It is good news for jobs here; we’re anticipating at least 100 new jobs, mainly manufacturing and distribution roles, and we want to recruit locally.

“We’re really seeing this as securing the future of Wavin here for decades to come. This comes after tough economic times, as have affected all manufacturers.”

Chris Bonsor, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, said: “All those jobs is reason enough to welcome an expansion.”
