MOTORISTS are facing chaos on the roads in the coming weeks with a series of roadworks set to cause delays.

Resurfacing work started in Drakes Way, on Thursday, which will see the carriageway heading towards the town centre closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

The road will be open over the weekend but the work will continue on Monday and finish on Friday.

A Swindon Council spokesman said: “We are resurfacing and changing the layout of the junction between Marlowe Avenue and Drakes Way.

“This means the route along Drakes Way towards the town centre has to be closed while the work goes on.

“But it has been timed to happen between 9.30am and 3.30pm, outside peak hours, to avoid rush hour disruption.

“There are no closures at all planned over the weekend.

“The carriageway heading in the opposite direction, towards the Greenbridge roundabout, will not be affected by the work and will remain open at all times.

“The diversion route around the closure is from Greenbridge roundabout, past the BMW plant, then Cirencester Way, Transfer Bridges and Ocotal Way.”

Yesterday, plans for a temporary road closure on the B4534 Westfield Way to allow for resurfacing work were also announced.

The dates that the repairs will take place have yet to be confirmed but diversions will be in place between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday at junctions with Thames Avenue, Haydon-leigh Drive and Windflower Road when it starts.

In addition, visitors to the Great Western Hospital may encounter further disruption as the council has announced that, as well as the roadworks currently going on near there there will be two months worth of roadworks, on the A4259 Marlborough Road, between the Coate roundabout and Commonhead roundabout.

The order will come into force on Wednesday but the start date of the work has yet to be confirmed.

A GWH spokesmansaid they were confident that the roadworks would not affect vehicles coming to and from the hospital.
