THINGS are looking up for young people in Pewsey with a new Local Youth Network and youth club.

Pewsey’s well-used youth club The Shak closed at the end of September as a result of Wiltshire Council cuts and a Local Youth Network has been now been set up to arrange activities across the community.

Karen Brown has been appointed as Pewsey’s Community Youth Officer and has been tasked with supporting LYN and co-ordinating the activities.

She is now looking for volunteer drivers to help young people access activities around the county.

Pewsey Parish Council is also supporting a monthly youth club at the fire station for 11-18 year-olds, SN9, which opened for the first time on Saturday. Fourteen people turned up to make use of the activities which include an Xbox paid for by Pewsey Area Board.

Pewsey parish councillor Simon Shaw said: “It’s not a bad turnout but we expect it will be higher at the next one once people get to know about it.

“It’s about offering young people a place to hang out, chat and play on the Xbox or Nintendo Wii that’s safe instead of them hanging around the Co-op car park.”

With the emergence of LYN the youth council is now expected to disband but young people will be able to use the youth club for free once a month.

Because of work commitment Coun Shaw cannot run the club more frequently but other volunteers can come forward to use the room and equipment for a youth group on a more regular basis.
