Plans to rebuild part of a 17th century home in Market Lavington, which was badly damaged by a fire, have gone to Wiltshire Council.

A report to the council reveals that home owners Frank and Sarah Jones have had to move into temporary accommodation while it is repaired.

The house at 50 High Street is Grade II listed and dates mainly from the late 17th century with a 1970s extension above the kitchen.

The report says: “On 2nd September 2014 a fire effectively destroyed the first-floor 1970s extension, the kitchen below and the inner hall, as well as smoke and water damaging the rest of the property and the neighbouring 52 High Street.

"The inner hall roof and the ceiling of the kitchen collapsed, destroying the interiors of both rooms and the whole structural integrity of the 1970’s extension above the kitchen, therefore necessitating a rebuild of the timber framed first-floor extension.”

Now the couple want to replace the fire damaged extension and reinstate the roof that was destroyed over the inner hall. They would also like to change the internal layout of the first floor bathroom and third bedroom.

Parish councillor Mr Jones and his teacher wife were out when the fire was first spotted by a plumber working on a neighbouring home.

The fire was caused by a build-up of heat from work at a neighbouring property. It was not connected with the plumbing work.
