Huge crowds are anticipated for the annual Trowbridge Christmas lights switch-on tomorrow when Glastonbury music festival founder Michael Eavis will turn on the lights.

Mr Eavis, who set up the festival on his farm in Somerset in 1970, will switch on the lights in Fore Street at 6.15pm, after taking part in a lantern procession in the town park.

The procession will start at the Civic Centre at 5.50pm before making its way to the Sensory Garden illuminated by hundreds of tealights.

There will also be a street market in Fore Street and Victorian Christmas craft fair in the Civic Centre during the day.

Maryrose Mantle, Trowbridge Town Council’s community development officer, said: “We are all really looking forward to it as the lights switch-on signifies the start of Christmas.

“We are expecting big crowds, especially with the weather set to be dry and free parking in council car parks.”

There will entertainment throughout the day on a stage in Fore Street.

The performers will include ALW School of Dance, Trowbridge Arts Creative Street Dance, belly dancers, and choirs from The Grove, North Bradley, Paxcroft, St John’s and West Ashton primary schools.

Trowbridge Town Hall will have a Christmas Grotto and Father Christmas from 10am-5pm. The lights switch-on will be followed by a carol service at St James’ Church from 6.30pm.
