ABBEYFIELD School in Chippenham had an inspirational visitor to present its annual awards last week.

More than 30 Year 11 students received awards from Captain David Henson, who was the British Armed Forces team captain in the Invictus Games.

Capt Henson lost both of his legs above the knee joint to an improvised explosive device during his first tour of Afghanistan as a Royal Engineer Search Advisor in 2011.

He won gold medals in the 200m sprint and in sitting volleyball in this September’s Games, which were championed by Prince Harry.

School business manager Lorna Lumb said: “Captain Henson inspired the students with a talk about his recovery and how, through his sporting achievements and work with the Imperial College London, he has re-established his life after his life-changing injuries.”

Aaron Booth was named as the student who contributes the most to school life beyond academic lessons and Daniel Adams the student who had overcome adversity to succeed.

Business manager Lorna Lumb said: “Whilst going through school has been difficult and frustrating for Daniel at times, he has always maintained an excellent attendance.”

The award for most enterprising student went to Harry Deeming, who also won the Wiltshire Business Award for Young Entrepreneur this year.

Shannon Collyer got the highest GCSE achievement and Jemma Harding had made the most progress since year 7 entry.

Awards were also presented for the best student in each department.
