DEVIZES Beer Festival organiser Don Jones was the toast of the town’s opportunity centre when he popped in to present a cheque.

He handed over £700 raised at the summer festival to our Give Us A Chance appeal.

The money came from unused tokens each worth 20p handed back to organisers at the end of the festival.

Don Jones, chairman of Devizes CAMRA, said: “I got to know about the work of Devizes Opportunity Centre when I was mayor a few years ago and we have all been following the stories in the Gazette, so it seemed like a very worthwhile cause.”

Centre manager Betty Newman said: “We are very grateful for the donation. It is fantastic how many people are raising money for us.”

She was also full of praise for volunteers who help keep the centre’s work going and bills reduced.

Among them are Lavinia Collinson from Melksham, who is a volunteer driver. She brings in youngsters from the town and took over the role when her mother Joan Harding retired.

A Christmas craft fair held at Wiltshire Police Headquarters in Devizes added another £706.05 to the centre’s coffers.
