SWINDON Town could soon be on the move in the near future – after club historian Dick Mattick and the supporters’ trust revealed their vision for a mobile museum.

Mike Welsh, vice-chairman of Swindon Town Supporters’ Trust, has enlisted the help of Dick in making the early moves towards a fully-fledged museum documenting the club’s history.

Dick and Mike last collaborated on the memorial plaque unveiled at the County Ground earlier this month to document the sacrifices made by former players killed in the two world wars.

Their next project may take more time and involve much more research, as talks begin in the new year to establish the memorabilia and artefacts already in place for such an exhibition.

Dick already has concerns for how much of the club’s history might already be occupying dustbins and dumping grounds across the world.

“We would attempt to find out what history of the club there is because so much disperses into skips,” he said.

“I want to find out what there is and try to bring it together. We need to share what we have got and make it accessible to the people of Swindon and the club.

“The trouble is, unless they’re aware of it they very often don’t know if something is important until it gets thrown out.”

The Marlborough Road resident said he had heard of grandchildren throwing away commemorative clocks given to former players when they had stopped working.

He had also been told by a former chairman “in years gone by” to take whatever items he wanted from one particular room because incoming builders would simply bin them.

On that occasion he recovered several historical minute books and a plan of an old stand at the County Ground.

“Those sorts of things, they need to have a home because with the best will in the world, my aunt, who I store some of my things with, is 101 now,” he said.

“We need to find out the size of the problem and find out what there is out there for us to use.

“The major problem is insurance. There are items insured at the County Ground for example, but they are not insured if they are taken from the ground.”

Taking items from the stadium is the key point for Dick and Mike, who want to have the museum in place there, but make it mobile enough for school visits or special exhibitions elsewhere.

Talks in 2015 are expected to include Swindon Society and Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, organisations which are expected to already be in possession of numerous relevant exhibits.
