A dog had a lucky escape when firefighters rescued him from a burning kitchen in Westbury.

Fire crews from Trowbridge and Warminster broke down the door to get into the house in Cheyney Walk on Saturday at 9.35am, as the owners were out, and found the Westie in the kitchen – safely below the level of the smoke.

“The firefighters were amazed to find the dog sat looking at them,” said Trowbridge station manager Andy Green. “He might not have realised what was going on. It was lucky that we weren’t significantly delayed. He is one lucky dog.”

A neighbour looked after the pet until the owner returned home. The fire is thought to have started in an oven but Mr Green said no major damage was caused.
