MASSIMO Luongo will not need any light-hearted reminders from his Swindon Town teammates to return his head to where it needs to be for the normality of League One football, according Louis Thompson.

Hours before Town fell to defeat to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, Luongo was collecting the Asian Cup Most Valuable Player award, having scored in the tournament final to give the Socceroos the title.

In the build-up to that game he dealt with multi-million pound offers for his services being rejected by Swindon.

It could be a lot to consider for a young professional footballer.

However one of Town’s other stars, who knows what it is like to come under scrutiny for their transfer value, Norwich-bound Thompson, believes his teammate will be unchanged by the experience and fully focused on getting the Robins promoted when he returns this week.

“We won’t need to bring him (Luongo) down to earth, he knows what his job is now,” Thompson told the media after the defeat to the Blades.

“(Luongo) can have an incredible season here, he’s been to the World Cup, won to the Asian Cup, got player of the tournament and he’s got a really good chance of getting us promoted as well.

“He’ll be desperate to do that, Yaser (Kasim) will be desperate to do that and I think the whole team will desperate to do that.”

Thompson added that he thought the performances of both Swindon players down under, Luongo and Yaser Kasim, were a credit to the club where they ply their trade “I’m ecstatic for the both of them (Luongo and Kasim), Yas and Mass both got nominated for player of the tournament.

“It just testament to the way that we’re playing, that they doing it on an continental scale.

“Asia’s a big place, there’s some good players there, some Premier League players and they’ve gone there and not only held their place but excelled.

“I think it’s no surprise that Massimo wins player of the tournament, he was on fire from minute one and we’re looking forward to having them both back.”
