PUBLIC services and sport students had to pay ‘attenshun’ at Wiltshire College Trowbridge this week, when they were visited by an Army drill instructor.

As part of their studies, the students received a visit from Army drill instructor Julia Dolan and spent two hours in the sports hall learning the basics of standing to attention, standing at ease, parade discipline and marching.

The session was overseen by Marlese Levermore, the curriculum manager for sport, public services and travel at Wiltshire College Trowbridge College, and sport lecturer Mike French.

Warrant officer Dolan, of 15 Signal Regiment, based at MoD Corsham, was pleased with the students’ efforts and said: “A few of them had Army Cadet experience but otherwise they were raw novices.

“It was all about teaching them the core values and standards of the British Army and why we use drill. It was a useful exercise for them and they all responded well to the basic drill instruction.”

The session concluded with a drill competition between three groups of students, with the team led by Jack Gilbert-Stone, an Army cadet, coming out on top.

The students will learn from a range of different services over the coming months, with a police leadership and teamwork event next month and a day with riot police being arranged for April.
