PEOPLE with learning disabilities will get the chance to question MPs during a unique event designed to get their voices heard ahead of the General Election.

The Swindon Advocacy Movement, which helps vulnerable individuals with aspects of their lives, will hold a hustings event tomorrow.

The event, in the Savernake Street Social Hall, will run from 5pm until 7pm,.

Hustings involve election candidates gathering to take questions from an audience.

It is a chance for members of the public to find out more about the candidates, their parties and their policies and is traditionally a good way to encourage participation in elections.

A number of politicians will be attending, including the MP for South Swindon Robert Buckland and his election rival, Labour’s Anne Snelgrove.

It is hoped representatives from UKIP and the Liberal Democrats will also speak.

SAM co-ordinator Anneliese Baker said the event was about giving their members a chance to make their opinions known.

And she said SAM members would also be helping people register to vote, so long as they bring their National Insurance Number along.

She said: “It’s a big deal for them to get their voices heard.

“And it is a chance to also see what will be done to support people who have special needs or support needs.

“It’s a chance for their opinions to be heard and for them not to be just excluded and it’s a good way to make sure people are involved in the community.

“It gives them confidence and new interpersonal skills and this is important for equality in the community.”
