PAINT-splattering was the order of the day at the Wyvern Theatre as X Factor contestant Amelia Lily and her Joseph co-star Matt Lapinskas attempted to create their own technicolor dreamcoats.

The highly creative duo hurled the coloured powder at each other Holi Festival style, catching a few onlookers in the process yesterday in a bid to promote the upcoming Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, due to open at the theatre in May.

Amelia, who was mentored by former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland, finished third on The X Factor in 2011, the year Little Mix claimed the crown. Despite missing out on the top spot, her debut single You Bring Me Joy reached number two in the charts.

The singer joined the cast as the narrator in February after a whirlwind audition and just four days of intensive rehearsals.

“I definitely improvised in the audition,” she said. “I had a day to look at the script and songs. They offered me the job after 30 minutes and I had four or five days to rehearse 22 songs. It was very intense. I was absolutely petrified on opening in Edinburgh.”

She said: “Joseph is a challenge for me; it’s totally different to what I normally do as a pop singer. But I love trying new things and challenging myself. And I love theatre, so to be a part of a big theatre production at the age of 20 is like a dream come true.”

Unable to explore Swindon this time around, she is looking forward to returning to the town in May.

“I have not been to Swindon before and I’ve not really had a chance to look around but I’m looking forward to coming back.”

Matt, who will be donning his Elvis outfit once more to reprise the role of the Pharaoh, is best known for playing Anthony Moon in EastEndersHe was also runner-up in the penultimate series of Dancing on Ice. He joined the Joseph cast in 2014.

His preparation for the role involved scouring the internet for videos of the King. He has now mastered his signature pelvis shake.

“It’s a great role to play; he’s very eccentric and crazy,” he said. “He believes he’s Elvis and it’s quite fun to portray. Musical theatre is more physically demanding than TV; it’s quite hard work but it’s brilliant. I’m really enjoying my second tour.”

Amelia and Matt will be joined by fellow X Factor favourite Lloyd Daniels who will return to the show as Joseph.

Bill Kenwright’s production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s global sensation Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will run at the Wyvern Theatre from May 19 to 23. To book tickets visit swindontheatres.co.uk or call the ticket office on 01793 524481.
