WHEN I was back down at the County Ground for the 25-year reunion of the squad that played at Wembley that year, Alan Mac (McLoughlin) got up and said something that I’d never thought about before.

He said that he remembered when we were at Wembley, there were no medals or anything for the players laid out before the game and it does make you wonder if they knew what was going to happen.

We won that game and it was taken away from us off the field. I haven’t got a memento from the game, apart from the one photo I have on the wall.

I remember being in Jersey and listening to the decision on the radio – I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard that they had demoted us two divisions.

If it had been Tottenham or Arsenal, would they have demoted them twice? But that’s the authorities and there’s nothing you can do about it.

In most games, when you get in front, you’re always looking for that next goal to make things more comfortable.

But against Sunderland, 1-0 was enough – we never, ever felt that they were going to get a goal.

The Sunderland fans clapped us when we went around the stadium after the game. How often does that happen?
