DANNY Talbot has been named in the Great Britain squad for the European Team Championships in Russia on June 20/21, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The Trowbridge Tornado has had a low-key start to the summer and his season’s best of 20.67secs only leaves him equal fourth on the UK rankings so his selection is a big vote of confidence from the selectors.

It is also recognition that Talbot has a good record in the event having finished second in the 100m in Germany last year, third in the 200m on home soil in 2013 and third four years ago in Stockholm.

“That will be a big opportunity for Danny and hopefully can catapult his season ,” said coach Dan Cossins.

“It is an event that he really can get up for and we will taper him down to make sure he is fresh for it.”

Cossins agreed that is record in the event has been very respectable but now he wants the 24-year-old Olympian to take the next step.

“It is time for Danny to start winning events like this,” added Cossins.

“It would be great if he could do that because it would give him some confidence going into the World trials (incorporated into the British Championships at Birmingham from July 3-5).

“Last year Danny was runner-up in the 100m at the European Team Championships and went on to win the 200m.”

Talbot has also been named in the 4x100m relay squad along with training partner Andy Robertson.
