THE victims of the Tunisian massacre were remembered in a minute’s silence by the people of Marlborough at midday today, a week after the tragedy.
With the Union flag flying half-mast above the Town Hall, councillors, the town mayor, police officers among others stepped out onto the steps, just before the clocked chimed midday, to pay their respects.
Marlborough College chaplain the Rev Dr David Campbell, who is also the mayor’s chaplain, read out a poignant prayer to those who paused in the High Street to reflect upon the devastating attack which left 38 dead, including Wiltshire couple Eileen Swannack, 73, and John Welch, 74.
Mayor Margaret Rose then said a few words in memory of those who lost their lives and extend her condolences to the families who are grieving.
One person who stood to pay his respects was student Mark Thomas, 18.
He said: “I can’t imagine what the families are going through. You go on holiday to have a good time, the last thing you expect is to come home in a coffin.”
