THERE’S a chance to relive some of the key moments of Calne’s history next week with the town’s first Heritage Week.

The week, the first of its kind for the town, is organised by the Our Place team, who are looking at how Calne is presented locally and nationally, and starts on Monday.

The week will conclude with a ‘Town Hall Time Machine’ where visitors will be able to step back to the hall’s Grand Opening in 1886.

Between 1pm and 4pm guests will be able to enjoy a Victorian photo booth, games and hand bell ringing as well as tea and cake amongst photographs of the town hall from Calne Heritage Centre’s collection.

Claire Selman, publicity and promotions officer at Calne Town Council, said: “It’s the first one and it came from the Our Place project with the aim of promoting the history of the town and this seemed like quite a good springboard for that.

“The group organising it is involved in Calne Heritage Quarter and it’s a way of tying up these lovely spaces and it’s showing they are one experience.

“The heritage centre is a hub for different things. There’s a lot of talks taking place such as a talk about the Harris factory and a spinning and weaving demonstrations.”

Families can pick up a Calne History Family Trail sheet from the Calne Heritage Centre between 10am and 4pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before going off in search of buildings, streets and landmarks from Calne’s past.

Many of the events are free, including an open day at the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum on September 13 which normally charges £7 for adults.

Calne Players are also getting involved with ‘A Humorous History of Calne’ at Marden House on September 12 at 7.30pm. Tickets for the performance, £5 adults and £3.50 children, are available from the Calne Heritage Centre and Community Information Centre.
