A SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS time was had by all at the third annual Holt Scarecrow Trail over the Bank Holiday weekend, with hundreds of families enjoying the village event.

Disappointing weather across the three days failed to deter visitors as they walked the trail, which saw 22 scarecrows themed around children’s literary characters dotted around the village.

Members of the public were tasked with identifying the different designs, with Mary Poppins, Charlotte’s Web and Puss in Boots among the scarecrows on show.

The trail raised over £400, with all proceeds from the trail, which is organised by the Village Hall Committee, going towards the Village Hall funds. The deadline for entries is on Thursday (September 3).

Village hall committee member Christine Tucker said: “It was an excellent weekend given the weather. In fact, it might have actually worked in our favour as it meant people stayed in the village.

“We sold over 150 trails, but we had more people than that as there were lots of families who had a sheet between them. We are really pleased with how it went and we have already had some great feedback.

“The scarecrows were themed around children’s literary characters and we had some great designs from different individuals. The amount of effort that was put in was incredible and people really pulled out all the stops.

“You could see everyone had spent hours making them and visitors could vote on their favourite as they were going around. It really is amazing what people can come up with.”

The scarecrow trail has previously taken place in conjunction with Holt Music Festival, but this year it ran as a separate event as the music festival had to be cancelled due to a lack of volunteers.

Mrs Tucker added: “This is the third year we have run the scarecrow trail, but it usually takes place as part of the music festival, so this is the first time we have held it at this time in the year.

“The feedback has been positive and people want us to run it again, so it is becoming more established. We managed to raise over £400, which is good going for a simple event.”
