PEOPLE living in Southwick, on the edge of Trowbridge and in Staverton called police after they were woken by loud music in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Wiltshire Police were unable to trace the cause and it later turned out the music was coming from an illegal open air rave being held in a quarry at Chantry, near Frome, attended by over 500 people, and had carried over 10 miles.

The National Police Air Service sent a helicopter to the rave, with residents posting on Spotted Trowbridge and Spotted Westbury about being able to hear the loud music.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We received reports of an unofficial and unlicensed music event taking place in Asham Quarry, Chantry, near Frome at about 1am on Sunday.

“Between 100-150 vehicles were reported to have attended with around 500 people on site. We continued to monitor the event but no complaints were reported up until 2.45am - music was contained within the site.

“One man fell and was taken to RUH hospital. Throughout Sunday people continued to leave the quarry and a number of sound systems were switched off and removed by the organisers.

“By 8.43pm that day there were no vehicles on site. Police enquiries are continuing.”
