STRICTLY fever took over Melksham Oak on Friday as teachers took part in their annual dancing fundraiser with this year’s money being put towards the school production of Grease.

Jodi Owens, who helped organise the event, said nearly 50 students and fourteen teachers took part in the event which has become a much-loved addition to the school’s calendar.

“Each year we use the event to raise money for something different and this year we were raising money for our school production of Grease and on the night, the cast actually performed a number which was absolutely brilliant to watch,” Miss Owens said.

“It is nice to have the event firmly in our school calendar because it has become well established at the school now.”

The seven staff couples took the floor to perform a jive, Charleston or waltz.

In true strictly TV style, the event had students acting as judges, who marked the staff dancers and eventually crowned assistant headteacher Aidan Blowers and Heidi Miller as their winners – the second time they have lifted the glitter ball in the event’s three year history.

Although a total has not yet been counted, Miss Owens said the event makes a substantial contribution to the fundraising efforts of the students but also gives the teachers a chance to get involved.

“One thing I think is quite good about the event is that the couples are from mixed departments and so it is good opportunity to get to know other teachers which would you wouldn’t normally be able to do,” she said.

“The commitment and dedication from the staff taking part has been fantastic because some of them have been practicing before the summer holidays so as a school we are very lucky that we have teachers who are up for anything.

“We have already been in talks for a theme at next year’s event and so we are looking forward to what people bring to the dance floor then.”
