THE 2015 Wiltshire Times and Salvation Army joint Toy Appeal has officially begun its campaign to help families in need this Christmas.

This year is the 14th year of the appeal, and drop off points will be available at the Wiltshire Times’ reception in Duke Street, Trowbridge; the management suite at the Shires Shopping Centre; The Salvation Army’s citadel in Castle Street, Trowbridge and Tesco Extra, in County Way, Trowbridge.

“Christmas is such a joyful and happy time and this will bring some joy into their lives,” said Trowbridge Salvation Army Church leader Major Kelvin Lang.

“Each year is different but there is always a great sense of satisfaction knowing that you are helping people who wouldn’t get support at Christmas. It is very rewarding to know it will bring such joy and happiness.

“Over the years we’ve been so grateful to the people and to our donors for their support. Social workers say they are overwhelmed by the support and generosity. Without the generosity from our supporters we wouldn’t be here today.”

Donations can include new toys, games, books, non-perishable food parcels and money – but the emphasis is all on giving families a happy Christmas.

Salvation Army member in Trowbridge and co-ordinator for the Tesco branch, Jean Coleman, worked with Major Lang to secure the toy appeal drop off.

Oliver Morris, general merchandise manager for Trowbridge’s Tesco Extra, said: the toy appeal resonated with him as he did something similar as a child.

“We are thrilled to do it again this year. What they do is so important,” he said.

“Some kids won’t get anything at Christmas so this is a brilliant way they can get their wonderful festive feeling. We are extremely happy about playing our part and helping this great cause.”

“The Salvation Army is dedicated to caring for the local community, but without the generosity of our supporters we wouldn’t be here today.

This year marks the 135th year of the Salvation Army’s presence in Trowbridge itself, which held its first meeting in the town on October 27, 1880 and the charity’s 150th year in all.

The toy appeal closes on closure date will be Saturday, December 12.
