FROME Town manager Nick Bunyard was left initially disappointed to only come away from Merthyr Town with a point on Tuesday night after he thought they had the better of proceedings.

Having taken the lead through an early strike from James Fitzgibbon, Frome were pegged back on the stroke of half time by Merthyr’s Jarrad Wright.

The second half remained goalless but Bunyard was pleased with the performance of his players and hopes they can build on the result going forward.

“I think upon reflection a point away to Merthyr is a good result,” he said.

“On the game itself I felt we should have won and had the better of it with quite a few chances late in the game.

“We were very disappointed to concede on the stroke of half time. We had defended ever so well against the wind and then it was an innocuous ball from the halfway line that was drilled in flat and the lad has headed it from outside the box and it has looped over Chitty.

“The lad is going to score one out of 50 attempts.

“I thought we reacted well in the second half and it was a good game of football considering the wind and the rain.

“I just can’t fault the boys’ attitude and their work rate.”

Frome have been on the hunt for a striker to lift them out of the doldrums in recent weeks, but having missed out on two potential targets, the search is ongoing ahead of their trip to Cirencester Town on Saturday.

“It has been a bit frustrating,” added Bunyard.

“We’ve come close to a couple but one on loan decided to stay and fight for his place at a Conference South side and Ashley Edenborough has decided to go back to his home town club Fairford even though it is a drop down in standard.

“Maybe he is lacking a bit of ambition at this point in his career.

“The search is ongoing and we are still speaking to people.

“I’ve just got off the phone to a Conference South manager trying to chat to him about a permanent transfer of a midfielder and potentially a loan of a striker so we’ll have to see how that goes.

“At this point anything happening before the weekend is probably looking doubtful.”
