SCHOOLS and businesses across Wiltshire got stuck in for Sport Relief last week to raise money for the most deprived areas in the UK and further afield.

Staff, parents and 300 pupils, aged four-11, from Bradford on Avon’s Fitzmaurice Primary School, hopped, skipped, jumped and ran the one mile challenge in various fancy dress attire, raising £209 for the charity.

Deputy head Jo Hill said: “Everyone completed the course and we are very proud of their achievement and the money we raised.”

British Olympic swimmer Chirs Walker-Hebborn visited Matravers School in Westbury on March 18 to give a talk and take part in a PE lesson with pupils.

Pupils at Dilton Marsh School put their baking skills to the test for a Sport Relief cake sale on March 18, raising £142.

A team of clients and staff from the First Step health club in Corsham did a watt bike challenge, raising a total of £510 and covering 761 miles.

Two childminders, Kate Dalby from Westbury and Sue Simpson from Sutton Veny, raised over £100 by performing a dance-a-thon with a group of their minded children on March 16.

At Westbury Leigh School, staff, pupils and their families completed a mile of the school field after lessons last Friday.

Pupils and teachers at Oasis Academy also put their best feet forward, when they ran a mile and all paid an entry fee, raising around £200.

Caroline Cox, principal at Oasis Academy in Trowbridge, said: “We’re a small school with a big heart and this was a great event to bring everyone together.”

Iain Thomson, an employee of Avon in Melksham, which manufactures protective equipment for soldiers including gas masks and protective suits, ran to work from his home in Bratton on Friday wearing one of the company’s products to raise funds.

He said: “I believe strongly in Sport Relief as an organisation and what it achieves for many reasons including how it gets many people involved physically and doing something positive.”

The contributions from Wiltshire added to a record national total for Sport Relief, which topped £55 million this week.
