SWINDON loves Years & Years more than free wi-fi.

Or at least, that’s what the banners said at the electronica trio’s sold-out gig at the Oasis on Wednesday night.

And judging from the screaming that came from the front of the venue when frontman Olly Alexander jumped down to meet fans, that banner ain’t far from the truth.

Some of those who were lucky enough to be right at the front had braved the wind and chilly temperatures to wait in line at the Oasis since 8 o’clock that morning – almost 12 hours before the doors even opened.

I, on the other hand joined the long queue a little later in the day. But even as far away from the stage as I was, Olly’s on-stage enthusiasm was infectious, and I was surrounded by people dancing away, creating a proper festival atmosphere.

Kicking things off, and setting the tone for the night, was support act Danish electro pop sensation MØ of Major Lazer and DJ Snake's ‘Lean On’ fame which had the hall pretty much packed out before the star billing band even took to the stage.

But the screaming really erupted when the band’s Y logo shone through from the back of the stage before Olly bounded onto the stage along with keyboardist Emre Türkmen and bass guitarist Mikey Goldsworthy to rapturous applause and cheers.

Sticking with the running order of album ‘Communion’, the first track up was ‘Foundation’, before favourites like ‘Take Shelter’ and ‘Worship’ followed.

Olly even braved opening an envelope that had been thrown on stage to him with the warning “please open carefully” written on it, which he discovered contained a ring and a letter.

Another keen fan then had most of her dreams come true in one night when she was hauled over the security fence to sit alongside him while he performed hit single ‘Eyes Shut’.

Three other fans later had the chance to show off their own dance moves on stage when he called on them to join him for ‘I Want To Love’.

Naturally the band threw some curve balls in there – most notably with a cover mash-up of Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ and ‘Hotline Bling’ by Drake. He even brought MØ back on stage for the encore for an impressive duet of Brandy and Monica’s 1999 hit ‘The Boy Is Mine’.

Naturally the gig was rounded off with the band’s biggest hit to date, the chart topping ‘King’, which saw the crowd go wild and demonstrate just how well they knew the lyrics.

On Friday night both MØ and Years & Years will hit the stage at the SSE Arena Wembley.
