JUST a week after the brother of rock legend Mick Jagger was in Seend to celebrate the re-opening of a road outside a village pub the lane was once again closed.

But just as pub landlord Ash Harlow and the parish council were getting worried it was revealed this time around the inconvenience would last just one day.

Musician Chris Jagger had played at The Barge on May 14 to celebrate the finish of work on a bridge over the Kennet & Avon Canal which had closed the road for months.

But on Monday the road was once again shut. Parish Council chairman Tony Murch said: "I spoke to the people doing the work and was told it was just patching of the highway and it would only be for one day.

"They will return at a later date to do a proper job."

The original road and bridge closure was part of a £720,000 project by the Canal & River Trust to carry out repairs to Seend Wharf Bridge. Navigation of the canal was possible from the end of March but the organisation's plans to re-open the road by mid-April slipped back to May.

Mr Murch is also looking forward to the temporary traffic lights in the village on the main A361 being removed once work to the bridge parapet is complete. Wiltshire Council is carrying out the work but has been waiting for river levels to fall.

Mr Murch said: "The lights have caused a number of problems but we have been told the work should now be carried out soon."

On a number of occasions there have been big tailbacks as the lights have stopped operating correctly.
